ChartsEdith Woodley Bailey Family Tree

Birth*Edith Bertha Woodley was born on 1 November 1913 at home at 227 Arlington Avenue, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, with a midwife in attendance. William Woodley told the story that when Edith was born, he walked down to accompany the midwife to the house. On the way back, they passed a brickyard and he stooped to pick up a brick to take along, telling the midwife that the first child had been a girl, and if this was, he was going to throw the brick at her (kidding, of course.) In fact, the brick was for use as a hot water bottle during the birthing.3,8,9,11

Ed/Primary*She attended the Crichton Street Public School, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, through grade 7, which at the time was the last year of elementary school. I am unclear whether she attended this school before the family lived briefly in Quyon, but certainly she did after, through about 1928.16
(with Parents) Residence1922, Edith Bertha Woodley was living at Lisgar Street, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, in the household of her parents, William Woodley and Mary Louisa Steele.16
Ed/Second*Between 1928 and 1934, Edith Bertha Woodley attended high school in Ottawa at Lisgar Collegiate [aka Ottawa Collegiate Institute], where she was a rifle champion for three years and knew the actor Lorne Greene from the TV show Bonanza. She served as secretary of the Student Council for one or two years. After she won the rifle championship, her father bought her her own .22 caliber rifle, which is in my possession.17,18,16
BaptismShe was baptized into the Ottawa Christadelphian Ecclesia at her parents' home on 24 November 1929 at 1 Ridgeway Avenue, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, and stayed in the Christadelphian faith her whole life. Her baptism was performed by Bro. A. S. Laird of the Ottawa ecclesia. She was very active in the Ottawa (Canada) and Newark, South Orange, Echo Lake, and Garfield (all NJ) ecclesias. Until she was in her 80s, she belonged to amended ecclesias, but she and Howard worked actively towards the reuninification of the amended and unamended Christadelphian groups, attending many functions at the Garfield (NJ) ecclesia and Schooley's Mountain (NJ) Bible Camp and various amended and unamended Bible schools around the U.S. and Canada. When Edith married Sam DiLiberto in 1997, she changed her membership to Garfield (unamended) and was already a familiar face there.19,1,20
IllnessShe had an appendectomy in 1932.21
Ed/CollegeShe attended college between 1934 and 1935 at Ottawa Normal School [Teachers College], Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Normal schools provided instruction in the norms, or standard practices, of teaching.22,18,16
Ed/CollegeIn the summer of 1935 she attended summer coursework in elementary art at Toronto, Ontario, Canada.18
Ed/CollegeBetween 1936 and 1937, Edith Bertha Woodley attended college at Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada. This was probably during summer sessions.23
Ed/College*She took two classes between July 1936 and August 1936 at Columbia University, New York City, New York.24,16
Note*She and Howard Louis Bailey first met circa July 1936 at the Hill Street Christadelphian Ecclesia, Newark, New Jersey, while Edith was attending summer classes at Columbia University.25
Occupation*Between September 1936 and 1939, Edith Bertha Woodley was an art teacher at Hopewell Avenue Public School, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It was about a half-hour by trolley, and Edith took her lunch each day. It was near the end of her third year there that she was diagnosed with tuberculosis.16
Ed/CollegeShe attended summer coursework for Supervisor in Art certification between 5 July 1937 and 6 August 1937 at Toronto, Ontario, Canada.18
Ed/CollegeShe attended a summer seminar in education between 4 July 1938 and 5 August 1938 at Kingston, Ontario, Canada.18
Illness*She was ill with tuberculosis between 1939 and 1940 at Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. She was diagnosed in the spring of 1939 and hospitalized in the sanitorium from June, 1939, until May, 1940. The first months were spent completely bedbound with a medically-induced pneumothorax (her lung was collapsed for complete rest of the affected lung). She was allowed to go home for four days at Christmas, the first time she had been allowed out for a visit, and she was released in May, 1940. A number of friends she made on the ward died while she was there. Because of an excellent insurance policy she had, Edith received a stipend while she was sick. She doesn't remember who paid for the hospitalization, although since it was required by public health laws she thinks it was probably paid by the government.26,16,21

Marriage*She married Howard Louis Bailey, son of Howard Tucker Bailey and Margaret Chitty, on 31 August 1940 at the home of Edith's parents at 1 Ridgeway Avenue, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. About 35 guests attended; Betty Fraser (later the well-known Canadian sculptor Elizabeth Williamson) was maid of honor, and Al Fraser was best man. Edith described the particulars in a letter shortly before the wedding:
Here are a few things about the wedding & reception. I am wearing a blue afternoon dress, street-length, navy hat & shoes, and a corsage. My bridesmaid, Betty Fraser, is wearing pale pink, a black hat & shoes and a corsage of blue flowers. Bro. Parkin of Toronto is going to marry us. A friend of mine with a grand soprano voice is going to sing "O Promise Me." One of our brethren, who is an excellent amateur photographer is doing the picture taking. Then the reception will begin at approximately four. The wedding is at three sharp. The menu consists of a jellied salad, thin bread & butter, tea & coffee, cookies, relish, (wrong order, as you'll see) and wedding cake & punch. You and two other girls will serve. There will be two ladies pouring, one tea & one coffee, a Mrs. Smith and Sister Laird. There will be a woman in the kitchen, making tea & coffee, unmoulding salads, cutting cake, washing cups & saucers, & so forth, and a neighbor girl friend helping her & keeping connection between the kitchen & table. It is a buffet service, of course.
Howard and Edith became engaged while Edith was visiting the 1939 World's Fair, but a month after her return to Ottawa she was diagnosed with tuberculosis. She tried to break off the engagement, convinced that Howard's family would not want him marrying a "tubercular woman" and that they would undoubtedly have worries about possible children of the union. Howard refused (with encouragement from his family), and each month he drove from New Jersey to Ottawa to visit her in the sanitorium. Edith was released from the hospital in May, 1940, and the wedding was planned for August. A trousseua tea was held 22 August 1940, and a marriage license (# KK 6608, probably issued in Ottawa) was obtained. Because of her TB, Edith was not allowed in the U.S. until 1946 (when Howard returned from the war), so the couple planned to live in Canada. Following the wedding and a honeymoon at the Woodley family cottage at Blue Sea Lake in Quebec, Howard returned home to arrange his affairs and find employment in Canada. Presumeably Edith lived with her parents during the interim. He worked at Westinghouse in Newark, NJ, until he was hired as quartermaster for the RAF flying school in Chatham, New Brunswick, and in May, 1941, Howard emigrated to Canada and the couple moved to Chatham. In the summer of 1942 the school moved to Neepawa, Manitoba, and Howard and Edith moved there. In late 1943, Howard joined the U.S. Army and left for basic training. Edith returned to Ottawa to stay with her parents until the war was over, and during that time she took brief substitute teaching jobs.5,4,27,26,28,29,30,31,32,25,16,11
